Orbis Terrarum is taking a brief hiatus in the months leading up to the release of the 4th Edition of the Dungeons & Dragons game! A new map showing the regions of the world of Terra can be seen below.
Orbis Terrarum is my homebrew setting for D&D v.3.5. This journal is a place for me to share some of the goodies I've come up with for the setting. Hopefully others might find some of these interesting. Feel free to use anything you like in your own games, or as inspiration, or as something to read while you're killing time at work!
My goal for Orbis Terrarum is to take inspiration from our own world's history, myths, and legends in a setting that is sort of an "alternate, magical version" of real-world history blended with the mythology and legends of many cultures. I acknowledge this isn't exactly highly original, but originality isn't necessarily my goal here, just fun. By using real-world cultures I don't intend to romanticize, demonize, or stereotype any real-world ethnicity, group, or religion, merely to evoke a recognizable culture that readers can understand and relate to (immediately or with a bit of research). Using real-world cultures as inspiration also allows me to use real-world languages (especially Old English and Latin) and existing constructed languages such as Tolkien's (one of my pet peeves of a lot of fantasy is "gobbledey-gook language" with no internal consistency). That said, I am no philologist myself, and so the accuracy of my translations will probably leave a lot to be desired!
All that said, welcome to Orbis Terrarum!
